The first milestone
The first milestone
The beginnings of the Kölln company date back to the end of the 18th century when Hans Hinrich Kölln acquired a small, horse-powered groats mill which he actively expanded. So he supplied ship’s biscuit to seafarers leaving Elmshorn and heading for Greenland.
Foundation of the company
After the death of Hans Hinrich Kölln the business was carried on by his wife until his son became of an age to succeed and to found today’s industrial enterprise in 1820. From modest beginnings, he laid the foundation for the generations to follow by hard work and commercial skills.
Committed to progress
When at the beginning of the 19th century industrialisation reached Germany, opportunities of the technical progress were quickly realised and the old horse-driven mill was replaced by a steam engine.
Oats – what else!
Besides the cereal wholesale, which for a long time was the economic focus of the company, Kölln developed into an important processor of oats in the years that followed. Up until now, the company is continuously investing in the modernisation of its production facilities to get the best out of oats.
The start in light-blue and dark-blue
In the 30s of the 20th century, the company launched the first oat flakes in small household packs on the market. With “Kölln’s Tender Oat Flakes“ in the light-blue/dark-blue pack, registered as a trademark in 1938, Kölln created one of the most popular German iconic brands and the company’s flagship. And, not least the colourful collectible picture cards contributed to making the Kölln oat flakes well-known and popular very quickly.
Kölln oat flakes, muesli & co.
No other cereal is as valuable as oats! In addition to Kölln’s tender oat flakes, delicious mueslis and traditional cereals, there are today also oat specialties such as oat bran flakes and soluble oats. Furthermore, the oat drink Smelk® even makes Kölln oat flakes drinkable and Kölln muesli bars offer the opportunity to enjoy Kölln mueslis on the go.
Today’s brand family
Besides the Kölln brand, also Palmin and Mazola, both characterised by a high quality standard, are part of the company’s brand family.
